What is an Initial Public Offering (IPO)? – Stock Market Terms

Stock Market Terms explained as simple as possible

An initial public offering or short IPO is when a private company becomes a publicly traded company to raise money.

On the initial public offering, shares are being sold to institutional investors and usually also to retail (individual) investors.

After the IPO, shares traded freely in the open market are known as the free float.
